It's one of the most common questions we hear from visitors planning a trip to Marrakech: "Can I just use Uber?" The short answer is no — but the full picture is worth understanding so you arrive with a real plan.
The Short Answer: No Uber in Marrakech
Uber does not operate in Marrakech (or anywhere in Morocco as of 2026).
Bolt is similarly unavailable.
Careem, which Uber acquired in 2019, has a limited presence in some Moroccan cities but is not reliably available in Marrakech for tourist use.
Attempts to launch ride-hailing apps in Morocco have faced strong opposition from the existing taxi industry, which is heavily regulated and politically organised. As a result, the market remains closed to the major app-based platforms.
So What Do People Actually Use?
Petit Taxi (Metered City Taxi)
The most common way to get around Marrakech is the petit taxi — small red saloon cars that operate on the meter within the city.
Price: Meter starts at ~2.50 MAD, typical short trip 15–30 MAD
Capacity: Maximum 3 passengers
How to get one: Hail on the street or at taxi stands
Key rule: Always ask for the meter: "Compteur, s'il vous plaît"
Drivers sometimes claim the meter is broken or quote a flat rate — especially to tourists. If that happens, move to the next taxi.
They cannot legally operate from the airport. If a petit taxi approaches you at arrivals, it's working off the books.
Grand Taxi (For Airport and Longer Trips)
Grand taxis are large cream-coloured vehicles that operate on fixed routes at negotiated prices.
Used for: Airport → city, inter-city routes, day trips
Price: Negotiated in advance (50–120 MAD airport to Medina, depending on time of day)
Capacity: Up to 6 passengers, but 4 is more comfortable
Private Transfer (Pre-Booked)
For airport journeys especially, a pre-booked private transfer eliminates all the friction of taxi negotiation.
What you get: Fixed price agreed in advance, driver meets you at arrivals with your name, door-to-door service, flight tracking if you're delayed
Price: 15–25 € for airport transfers
Booking: Online in advance
Walking
The Medina is best explored on foot. Many riads, restaurants, and attractions are within walking distance of each other — though the alleys are narrow, unmarked, and easy to get lost in. Download Google Maps offline before you go.
Calèche (Horse-Drawn Carriage)
A uniquely Marrakech experience — the calèches operate around the walls of the Medina and near Jemaa el-Fna. Agree the price upfront (usually 100–200 MAD for a circuit of the walls). It's a tourist experience rather than a practical transport option.

Our Recommendation
For getting around the city day-to-day: petit taxi (always with the meter).
For the airport: private transfer. The negotiation stress with a grand taxi after a long flight is not worth the small saving. A private transfer with a fixed price, flight tracking, and a name sign at arrivals is the right call for most visitors.
